The second law states that if a gas or vapour composed of a single element is heated, it will emit bright lines at definite wavelengths.

The third law states that when the same gas is cool it will absorb light at the wavelengths at which it emits light when hot, thereby reversing its characteristic spectrum from bright to dark lines.

Applying these laws to the Sun, Kirchhoff proposed that the visible surface of the Sun, or photosphere, consists of a hot liquid that emits a continuous spectrum. A cooler gaseous layer making up the atmosphere of the Sun overlays the photosphere and absorbs certain characteristic lines from the continuous spectrum. This then causes the dark lines. To support this model of the Sun’s surface, Kirchhoff described an experiment that he carried out in his laboratory. He wrote:
